About Showmi Das

As a dancer she has training in North Indian Classical Dance, KATHAK under Jayashree Acharya, a senior disciple of the world renowned Pandit Birju Maharaj. She has been dancing since the age of 5 and her training initially started in Bangladesh in Folk dance, as well as the basics of Bharatnatyam and Monipuri.

As a performer, she has performed all over the United Kingdom, as well as United States, Thailand, Singapore, India and Bangladesh. Alongside performing, she choreographs for her dance troupe ‘Tridhara’.

She has been working as an artistic mentor with various Councils, Educational Authorities, Arts Organisations and Disabled Organisations in developing and constructing Indian Dance Workshops for primary school children, 16-19 year olds, the disabled and the elderly, where the workshops focus on education, artistic creations, physical awareness and healthy living, while promoting various styles of Indian Dance to the diverse community in England.

Her dance style experiments with the Indian Classical forms and South Asian Contemporary Dance. In 2010 she was appointed as a Judge for the Diwali Dance Competition by the London Borough of Brent. As a performer her most acquired audiences include Tony Blair, David Cameron, Boris Johnson and Her Majesty The Queen.

Accordingly she has always been involved with the theatre world, where most of my work has been presented as an Actress, Movement Choreographer and recently a Director. Her first directed Dance Theatre Production of ‘Sounds of Silence’ for The Rokeya Project staged in collaboration with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in November 2010. She also runs The Rokeya Project with Claudia Jazz Haley, a theatre graduate from Rose Bruford College. The project is dedicated to working internationally various age groups through Arts and raising awareness to issues faced within all societies today.

Besides Dance and Theatre, she has modelled for the London College of Fashion and Fashion Week London. She has also been a stage Presenter and has hosted various awards shows. As a host she has worked alongside Big Dance 2010, Zee TV and BBC Asian Network.
